As radios get older their loudspeakers detiriate and may develop small
tears in the cone , mostly around the outer edges where it meets the
flexible suspension ribs.
In home stereos where HIFI sound reproduction is wanted , speaker
repairs like this are not common as adding weight to the cone with
glues will affect its frequency response.
For communications receiver applications though where mostly only mid
range frequencies are required a repair may be a good option if the
damage is light.
This Yaesu FRG-7 had been bothering me for some time with its strange
sounding audio.
With a little investigation I found a tear in the speaker cone.
Its totally invisible in this picture , and even when you look really
close you still cant see it.
But with light finger pressure placed on various places around the cone
a 5mm
long tear was revealed.
When lit from the rear the hole was easily seen , and even though
it's still
small , it was affecting the sound , and as small holes will grow to
become big holes I felt it was time for a little repair.
